i love the grolsch style flipper bottles. they cost a little more, but they are larger (16 oz. compared to twelve) so you don't have to use as many (about 40 per batch compared to sixty) and they are so easy to use. you can also use 750 ml champagne bottles because these hold about a quart of liquid so you only need about two dozen per batch. they can be capped just like a beer bottle just be careful because european bottles use a larger cap and standard bottle caps won't fit on them. i learned this the hard way and lost half a batch late one night. if you choose to go the grolsch way, the bottles only cost about 50 cents more full than empty, so if you have time, find a store that sells grolsch and enjoy a few cold ones in order to build your bottle supply. over the past several months i've accumulated over seventy bottles and plenty of good times in this fashion.

My main concern is how air tight they are, so I don't end up with 5 gallons of Cider Vinegar.

as long as the gasket is intact (they're pretty durable) the bottles are airtight. i've actually had so much pressure build up on a really carbonated batch that the assemblies blew clear off the bottles several times when opening them. however... i don't know how they will work over extended periods of time. i use the grolsch bottles for my quick turnover beers (less than two months), and use regular capped bottles for anything i'm keeping around for a while.

I used to drink a lot of Grolsch to get bottles for bottling my brew.
I don't find it to be particularly palatable these days.
Tends to be a bit skunky at the places I have seen lately (Probably due to light exposure).
If you do go for the green bottles keep your brew out of the light.
I imagine the same applies to cider but not sure.
OTOH, the flipper cap style bottles are very convenient.
I recently acquired a 12 pack of brown liter flip tops (35 bucks ouch).
They are very nice to quickly bottle a good portion of a batch.
Another source might be your local bars.
I used to be a bar near my home that sold Grolsch and the owner would save the bottles for me.
I was a regular and would cart home a case of bottles at least once a week.
